Konapun Japanese Sample Food Making Kits

Konapun is a miniature, non-edible food-creation kit for “cooking” tiny ultra-realistic replica food items. It’s manufactured by Bandai, one of the biggest toy manufactures in Japan.

“Kona” means powder and the main ingredient is powdered sodium alginate which is a fiber contained in seaweed. Each food powder contains different additives to create the color and viscosity required to imitate the designated dish.

None of the “food” can be actually eaten, but that doesn’t take any of the fun out of pretending to be a Japanese housewife!

Except for the “tastes like candy” part, Konpun sounds very similar to something William Gibson’s described in “All Tomorrow’s Parties” (1999):

Boomzilla likes this Jap candy that’s like a little drug lab. You mix these different parts, it fizzes, gets hot, cools. You do this extrusion-molding thing and watch it harden. When you eat it, it’s just candy, but Boomzilla likes making it.
